INTRODUCTION TO CREATIVE WRITING

Humor, honesty, imagination, invention, texture, hope, surprise, intent – these are a few of the tools used in creating literature. They are also the tools that transform lives. This workshop will acquaint participants with the implements of the writer’s craft and show them how to wield them in a way that creates literature and transforms lives. Sessions will focus on the elements of fiction and creative nonfiction including setting, character, plot, dialogue, and much, much more. There will also be discussion on publishing paths for written work.

Participants will read a little and write a lot, gaining confidence, skill, and a clear picture of what they want to write and how best to achieve it.

MEMOIR: Exploring Your History Through Journal and Workbook

Our earliest experiences shape our lives and their expression. They are our closets and our treasure chests.

In this workshop participants will explore the experiences of childhood and early adolescence as reflected in memoir and its fictional extensions. Through in-class exercises and their own writings, they will capture and come to understand their personal visions of childhood and how they have come to manifest in the present.

Participants will learn to use journal and workbook as a way to creatively and constructively explore the past.

Selected readings will include: Angela's Ashes - Frank McCourt, The Liar's Club - Mary Carr, Memories of a Catholic Girlhood - Mary McCarthy, Letter to His Father - Franz Kafka, Call it Sleep - Henry Roth, The Bluest Eye - Toni Morrison and more.

Poet, travel writer, novelist and teacher Linda Watanabe McFerrin is a contributor to numerous journals, newspapers, magazines, anthologies and online publications including the San Francisco Examiner, the Washington Post, the San Francisco Chronicle Magazine, Modern Bride, Travelers' Tales, Salon.com, and Women.com. She is the author of two poetry collections and the editor of the 4th edition of Best Places Northern California.

A winner of the Nimrod International Journal Katherine Anne Porter Prize for Fiction, her work has also appeared in Wild Places and American Fiction. Her novel, Namako: Sea Cucumber was published by Coffee House Press and named Best Book for the Teen-Age by the New York Public Library. Her collection of award-winning short stories, The Hand of Buddha, was published in 2000. She is also a contributor and publishing partner in the recently released Wild Writing Women: Stories of World Travel. Linda is currently at work on a novel set in China.

Linda holds an undergraduate degree in Comparative Literature and a Master of Arts degree in creative writing. A popular panelist, lecturer and workshop leader, she has been a Mentor for the Loft Literary Series, a guest instructor at the Oklahoma Institute for the Arts and a judge of the San Francisco Literary Competition. When she is not on the road, she directs art, consults on communications and product development and teaches Creative Writing.
